Niki Considering the wine

Painting with Friends in Tuscano

February 28, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

In May this year is another ‘Painting Week’ in Barga, Tuscany. Introducing Niki and Glenys. We started painting together in 2002 in the Greek Islands. It was the first organised painting trip we’d done with a group and we’ve developed a bit of a passion for it . In 2008 we did the Italy trip through Tuscany and Umbria. We just have such a glorious time together and have the same mad humour and dedication to getting paint on paper […]

Bellagio Las Vegas

Quick Notebook Sketch in Vegas

February 28, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Getting back to my fast sketches. This was done while sitting at the French bistro under the Eiffel Tower, directly across the road from Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas. Is anything real? There was time to do this one  - after ordering my French salad with French fromage, and French baguette came to the table. Where am I again? As with everything in Vegas, the hotel is gynormous, so I may not have got every window and a few floors […]

Line- From The Island

Line & Watercolour-From the Island

February 25, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

The second drawing. These walls are very ‘Balmoral’. Also very difficult to get right. There are upper and lower levels. Pointed caps, bevelled indented panels and much more. Actually they are a nightmare to draw, but look great even if you only get some bits right. The bridge from the island is rather an icon of Balmoral Beach. Every painter shows this bridge, usually from one side or the other, but here I’ve shown the angle where you see the […]

Line drawing - On the Esplanade

Line & Watercolour – On the Esplanade

February 21, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

More drawings. This is one of two that I’m working on, in skinny portrait. That’s because I can fit two on my watercolour block and they are a nice size. I might do the next two as skinny landscapes. This time I used less hatching than ‘Kiosk’ and with watercolour going over the top. it probably didn’t need it. The lines are very free. I never use a ruler,  - as if you couldn’t guess, and they tend to go […]

Kiosk - Square Crop

Cropping Choices

February 19, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This is just an experiment to see if any of these work. The previous finished line and watercolour painting had an excellent comment from Noel, about a distracting window to the left of the composition, so I’ve gone a bit nuts here, playing with various cropping choices. I think it’s possible to do this to paintings or drawings which don’t appear to be working. There will be a portion which is working fine, so it can be worth cropping that […]

Sunny Day, Ferry comes in

Quick Plein Air Watercolours

February 13, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I was deciding whether to spend a spare hour drawing or painting. In the end the painting won. I love nothing more than settling in a good spot and splashing some paint around. For this very small painting (234 x 130mm ) I went down the bank outside home and decided that I wanted those yummy rocks to be in it and the ferry would soon be coming, so that would be where the eye would lead to. Actually it […]

Kiosk, Line drawing

Kiosk, Line & Watercolour in Progress

February 7, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This is a sketch I was keen to do. Something about the action in a small space, in the wall of a very big 1928 building. In front of it the most magnificent old Morton Bay Fig. The trunks are so elephant like, but so loveable. It’s such a funny thing having this big patient tree, with it’s arms stretched out and roots looking like lots of toes spread out into the bark chips spread beneath. And underneath the busy little […]

Before the Action

Pictures from an Exhibition

February 5, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Well I survived. What a fab night it was. Everything came beautifully together. The 90 guests, the 3 perfect wines, and a selection of tasty morsels which people are still talking about, from the chef at The Bathers kitchen. Oh yes and the paintings. I was so pleased with the hanging and they definitely look best unframed. That means I can keep the prices down. The average cost would be $300 – $400, but there are some for less. Sales […]
