Before the Day Begins

Before the Day Begins

March 31, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I like to start the day with a nice cup of tea. Cups of tea are always nice, or so the saying goes. This was Sunday morning. No deadlines, things to do, places to be. So I set my nice cuppa tea down on the little round table outside, and drifted into thought. My mind began to see the pot plant and cup and the cast shadow of the rising morning sun, and wanted me to go and get my […]

Oriental Lilies

March 27, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

One could get the idea that all my sketches recently are this bouquet of perfumed Oriental Lilies.  I promise this is the third and final one. The blooms are mostly out now and I’ve taken out any that are over, so it’s not exactly the same anymore, but then neither has my treatment of the medium. I decided to put the colour down first. This meant letting go a bit, as I didn’t even do a pencil composition. Just wet the […]

Tommy Rocker's Vegas

Tommy Rocker’s Las Vegas

March 22, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I was flipping through my sketch book and found some of the sketches I’d been doing in Las Vegas last December 09. I found it so easy to take out the pen and pad in casinos, cafes, bars etc. No one cares, in fact they like being looked at in that town. This particular evening Milton and I felt like taking in some good music. Rock, jazz, blues, all fine, except it was after 1am and the major shows had […]

Out on the Water

March 21, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

The weather has been gorgeous. I’ve noticed people saying that in both hemispheres. The small sketch was just a few of the yachts nearing the end of the race, just as the light was getting a gold glow. On Sunday racing takes place most of the day, but I did grab a moment to get a sketch on paper. It gets busy with people passing too, especially on a sunny warm Sunday. Everyone seems to be in a good mood.

Bouquet Blooming

Bouquet Blooming

March 21, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

The bouquet is looking much bigger and more colourful now. At least half the flowers are open and the colour of the magenta is gorgeous.Still at least that many buds yet to open. In fact I’ve treated  the colour it much more intensely over the line drawing, than the first one. It just seemed to ask for that. I think there’s another drawing yet.

Birthday Bouquet

Birthday Bouquet

March 18, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This is a very large bunch of Oriental lilies, which when I got them were all just buds and greenery. Actually very sensible, as it means a good 3 weeks of fresh flowers. I had placed them on a side table and when I saw the first flower opening this morning, delayed my gettaway to sketch them. I even stayed long enough to get some colour washed in. Now I’m home and there are at least 2 blooms fully opened […]

Sunrise

Sunrise-Watercolour with line

March 16, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I wasn’t expecting to paint early this morning. I mean, it’s midweek and I have things to do , places to be!! When I opened my eyes my first thought was to get the kettle on. But I could see the warm glow sneaking through the crack in the curtains – so mind being pin sharp – filled my water jar, and thought ” I’ll have a go at this.”  Opened the water colours, and began putting down washes. I […]

Full Moon on the harbour

Full Moon – Cropped 4 Ways

March 10, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I hadn’t realised we had a full moon till I suddenly noticed how bright the night seemed to be. This moon was fabulous and I wondered if it was possible to paint all those subtle darks. I knew I couldn’t paint at night so did a reference pic which of course could not show much except where the reflections the moon and the monastery were. Here is where my artistic interpretation took charge, and I decided this is what I […]

Sunday Morning

2 Sunday Sketches with Watercolour

March 7, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

What do you see from your bedroom? I opened the curtains this morning, quite early on a beautiful day as the sun was rising behind the umbrella, and the box hedges behind.  I could hear just the sounds of the day waking up. Suddenly I wanted to draw this little snippet of a view, even though I was still in bed. Right then. Before anything got in the way I was off to get my sketch book and the teeny […]
