Beginning Fairlight Beach Acrylic

Next Experimental Painting

August 31, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I have a Vlaminck page in a sketchbook of drawings and reference I’d collected, and decided to have a crack at this style. His is of trees and a house, but no matter, mine is based on some photos I did along the beach walk, so not much similarity there!. It’s the colours he used I loved, and then big black lines all over it to define the shapes of things. I taped up the painting block, and began putting […]

Acrylic Painting – 3rd Stage

August 26, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This is when you can start actual painting. If you are happy with the previous layers and glazing, you now mix the colours you’ll be using, with some Gel Medium (gives lustre ) and Open Medium ( holds off drying too fast. ) It’s now that the experimenting takes place. I changed the sky colour several times – rubbing it off with wet paper towel and my tiny sponge. ( Remind Joanna to get some for me when in Santorini […]

Milo the Cat in his Paris Apartment

The Complete ‘Milo the Cat in Paris’ sketch series

August 26, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Learn to Sketch like the ones above. Create your own Paris sketches & add your own cat or dog later. Join us on our next ‘Travel Sketch Art Tour’ to France in September 2012.  10 -16 Paris. 16 -23 South of France. Bookings close very soon. Well – finally managed to complete all the sketches for this series. A different Milo the Cat in each location. Originally I had thought of using the just first cheeky sketch of him in his apartment, but then the idea […]

Milo the Cat at Eiffel Tower

August 25, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This is the real Milo the Cat in Paris. I have now completed 8 drawings of him on his Paris adventures. All of which took place while the person he owns was absent. However she has now discovered what he’s been up to and has forgiven him. I did take good care of him while I created the series and he now has many fans who are following his hi-jinks. He seems more than happy to view the world from […]

Kayaks At Manly Cove - Watercolour

Turquoise Water – Manly

August 24, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Drum roll. Da daaaaa. The painting is complete. Last week I went to Manly and did the drawing and this week the painting has happened. Although I had photos I decided against referring to them at all. The drawing was to be my reference and I’d done the simplifying there. The scene is a bit complicated when you actually view it, with one large wharf, and another in front of that, so lots of detail I decided to lose. It’s […]

Friend from around the world all collected on my pinboard.

My Pinboard Friends

August 20, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Last week I painted the cork  white – as if you’d see it now anyway. Then out came my special collection of bits and pieces I’ve saved which inspire me, and which had been in boxes because I’ve had nowhere for them. I have cards from Glenys based on her superb South African paintings. A set of Tuscan illustrative cards I’ve always like the style of. A mad series of Paris postcards of the Eiffel Tower as crazy paintings. Some […]

Amelie choosing a card from the new spinner

Amelie helps with the big Art decisions

August 18, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

It’s good to have someone to talk to when you are deciding what to paint next. Should I start that Cafe de Flore one or should I get onto the half finished stack?  Or to heck with it all and  go drawing somewhere. This is where Amelie our Shi-itzu. Now 9 years of age and a very supportive companion, comes in. She always gives me her views. Never complains, never answers back, and listens politely if a painting is going […]

Kayaks at Manly Cove.

Kayaks at Manly Cove

August 17, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Today I headed down to Manly beach to see how this aspect would work. Nice blue day and the water on the edge was gorgeous as it came in over the sand. The colour was unbelievable. A chap had asked if I had any originals of this side of the Cove, with the Kayak Centre on the pontoon and the wharf behind. I think he has a relationship with the kayaks or pontoon or something. If you get what I […]

Saturday in the Studio

Acrylic Glazing – next stage

August 15, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Saturday. Love sunny Saturdays. Doesn’t matter what the time is today. Get my little bowl of cereal and fruit. Make my ‘flat white’. Go down to the round glass table and take a seat in the sun. Does life get any better than these moments. Actually my moment nearly came to a crashing halt, when I realised the nice new box of cereal and the muesli were not in the cupboard where I expected to see them! Nor were they […]
