Picnic at Balmoral

Picnic at Balmoral

February 28, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Sketch Club was at Balmoral Beach on Saturday. I forgot how busy it gets for Weddings. At one stage there were four brides that I could see, each with their guys in formal gear and their attendants in pink, or lavender and others in black.I saw at least seven all up. I plan to do a sketch with a Wedding as part of it very soon. Tonight there would be a performance of ‘Comedy of Errors‘ by the […]

Dee Why Surf

Monday Morning Surf

February 26, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It was a gorgeous day. Every few months I meet for coffee with the other members of the ‘Kneesup’ group. We met 5 years ago at a Rehab Hospital ( you spend a week there) after we’d all had knee replacements. Jill, John , Mary and Erin. There were a couple of others but now it’s just the hard core group and we love it. None of us would have crossed paths in our other lives but we […]

Santa Maria discovers us

Hello Christopher Columbus

February 20, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It might have felt like this for the locals in America 600 years ago. There you are, stretch, yawn and think about breakfast – when what should be out on the bay is a largish brown wood carrack. It’s the ‘Santa Maria’ and I haven’t  anything clean to put on. Are they friendly or not. We will soon know. They have canons on board and seem to be getting their gear sorted, as they moor in the bay […]

Mixed Media - More Manly Moments

Mixed Media – Fresh off the Easel

February 18, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

This is like being at Yoga. Breathe deeply and let go. Painting is like that too. You can get so tight and labour the work till you can’t find that wonderful spontaneity and freshness. So I let go, and did something with lovely pure colour and simply let the design find itself. Once again I used pieces from my sketches to create a story, then worked the colours and textures to connect the parts. So much fun and […]

Old Kurrajong Cinema

Art Deco – Kurrajong

February 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

They have it all in Kurrajong. Why go any further if you happen to be looking for a little something in the Art Deco period (1927 – 1935) Just take a stroll along the main road, past Sassafras Creek Cafe, but not as far on as Midsommer St Stephen’s, and you cannot miss it. Classic zig zag and straight lines. Decor in Shell Pink, with Olive Green. It looks great actually and is a perfect show place for […]

Mixed Media 1

And now for Something Completely Different

February 11, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Mixed Media. I loved doing this. It’s about moments in time. It’s about feelings. It’s about colour. Mixed Media 1 –  is the building block. Glazed pieces of my sketches and texture from paper napkins painted in Acrylic Medium and some lines dragged through the thickest areas for effect. Mixed Media 2 –  now has clear  bright colour added – acrylic – painted wherever I feel like it.  Then come decisions about how much and which colour where. Once I’d […]

The Bell Tower, St Stephen's

Midsomer Murders – St Stephen’s Church Kurrajong

February 10, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It was Peta who made the comment when she saw the drawing. Oooh Midsomer Murders –  was there anyone hiding in the bushes? Well, actually I did hear some twigs crack. Then there was the man sitting in a chair on the far side of the graveyard, facing out to the valley. So silent here. I thought it was odd. Was he alive? Kurrajong is very much after the style of the villages in U.K. where this long running series […]

Cafe at Kurrajong Village

Sassafras Creek at Kurrajong

February 9, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Virginia and I took the one and half hour trip for me to see my client there about an upcoming exhibition. The plan was to do some local sketches and work out painting subjects. Kurrajong Village is at the base of one of two roads through the Blue Mountains. An idyllic little place, with a proud history and many of the residents are related to the founders of the area. This side of the mountains is popular for it’s apple […]

10pm Saturday 31º

Red Sky in the Morning…

February 6, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

…shepherd’s warning. 10 p.m. Saturday night. I am outside on the balcony gazing to the view beyond, breathing in the cooler air.  31º but 10º lower than the day. A crazy moment comes when I decide to do a quick sketch. Low lighting from inside glows enough for me to see the sketch book page. It’s strange not seeing where the colours are in the tiny paint box, or where I’m putting them on the few lines drawn. I decide […]
