Colour Texture X 3

Bright Colour, Rich Texture

May 30, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I’d had these 3 canvases for awhile. Each had a very textured base I’d created with gesso and scrunched up paper. My plan had been to create a series of 3 which would hang together. But being me I’d not followed that idea, but done contemporary compositions in everything from pure colour, to gelato ones. Each was interesting but didn’t really make it on their own or as a group. So – even though I’d prepared 2 other new canvases, […]

Pink Harbour

Pink Harbour

May 24, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Here I go again with the knocked back colour, lost edges and calming subject. I love it when people feel happy when they look at my work. They actually say that. I also like a painting you can keep going back to,  remembering something from your past. A boat ride, a tree shape, a bird call, a walk with a friend. You can live forever with a painting like that. Glenys was very helpful with this one. I was certainly […]

The Potter's Cat by Glenys Cullimore

The Potter’s Cat

May 20, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It’s been a good productive week in the Studio. A real flurry of action.Lots of painting going on. We’ve also squeezed in ‘The Archibald’ exhibition at AGNW and ‘Salon des Refuses’ at SH Ervin Gallery, The Bathers this morning – where we exhibit next year, plus some great teas and coffees. Glenys has been working with me while she’s here and already has this one – ‘Le chat de Potiers’ -  complete, and another virtually done. We still have a few […]

Hammock by the Sea

Hammock by the Sea

May 18, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

This is just the second Acrylic layers and glazing painting I’ve attempted since Italy. Now that I’m painting full time and not beating deadlines, I have begun to explore this style again. I loved the whole process when we first worked through it with Chris Bell in Barga. I loved building the layers and seeing what showed through with each new colour washed over. Somehow the direction you will go in is unfolding as the colours do. This one has […]

Daylight Artist’s lamp for Autumn days

May 17, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Now that it’s Autumn, days cam be a little less bright.Time to switch on the new Daylight Lamp. I was very lucky that the Australian Sales Rep for The Daylight Company, happens to pass my Studio quite often. Pierre-Louis called in one day and in his charming Paris accent, showed me the product and  asked  if I’d like to try one. Just see what I thought. Give it a whirl. Test drive it. Oh okay then. Twist my arm a […]

Manly, on the Water

A Little Expressionism

May 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I seem to be liking these colours at the moment. Gelato colours. Chunky strokes. Lost edges. No blacks. This canvas began as a spare which I had no plans for, because it didn’t have the thick sides I like. But there it was when I had a palette full of extra acrylic paint I didn’t want to throw out. And as I do, I use leftover colours over gesso to create a good base for whatever painting will take place. […]

From the Pathway

Soft Edges and Muted Colour

May 10, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I was approached recently by a local school who had a novel fundraising idea. As many local artists as possible were approached to see if they would paint, write, scribble, decorate  a 12inch canvas. Well they supplied the canvas and a big padded bag to return it to them so how could I not. No signature or clue as to who had created the work would be visible when all the paintings hang on the night of the Art Show […]
