Bacchus by the Sea

Garden on the Water

June 28, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I see the matching Bacchus sculptures at the edge of the garden, with the classic column wall between, as I descend the steps. The harbour glitters. This is the garden at ‘Casa Mia’, a Spanish Mission style mansion about to be demolished. The lawns, shrubs, and flower beds would once have been much more in keeping with the style of the house. However what is still there is enough to give a hint of what used to be. Once the […]

Casa Mia on Manly Cove

Spanish Mission style to go.

June 25, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I saw in the local rag that this sublime Spanish Mission style mansion will soon make way for yet another contemporary apartment block. As part of my sketches of Manly Homes & Gardens I thought I’d better get down there quick smart and get it on paper. So before going to the Studio this morning, I went looking for it. Turns out it’s directly opposite from our place, and now I know which one it is, I’ll know when they […]

Fishermen & Waiting Pelicans

Fishermen & the waiting Pelicans

June 21, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

What a wonderful weekend away with the girls. My Yoga friends had talked about getting away somewhere together, doing some yoga, some sketching, walking, exploring, much conversation with a little wining and dining. You learn some lovely things about 5 girls (and one 13yr old doggie)  all chipping in what they do best over 3 glorious days.  Two are amazing ‘Masterchefs’ ( to me who doesn’t do food confidently.)  My contribution was morning and afternoon tea, (very difficult!) and sketching […]

Afternoon Shadows Manly

Afternoon Shadows, Manly Beach

June 15, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

This is a Winter beach painting. If it was summer, you’d hardly see the sand for people, and the shadows would be much less. Winter can be the best of both seasons. Clear blue skies, no wind, calm seas and no humidity – and warm. I do put clouds in my paintings anyway, cos I love them. The shadows at this time of year are very dramatic from late afternoon on, and I like the moment when I add that […]

Birkley Road

Birkley Road, Manly

June 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Now that I’m sketching in my local surrounds I’m making interesting observations. The house we stayed in in Berkeley, San Fran had a very similar look to some of these homes. I realised it’s the shingles. There they tend to go for a lot of brown, whereas here the shingles are picked out in feature colours. Hadn’t really looked before. Birkely Road (Manly) is directly opposite the Studio so it was an obvious and easy choice. Considering it was threatening […]

Morning Walk, Fairlight

Morning Walk, Fairlight

June 10, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Been awhile since I’ve done a watercolour.  I need to keep a good selection of small local paintings in watercolour.  Of course I’ve been doing the soft acrylics, but are much bigger. I love the long morning shadows. It means in a big foreground area such as in this painting, where nothing is happening – put in the long shadows and it pulls the composition together nicely. This walkway is an ‘off leash’ for the dogs too. So on a […]

Peaks & Turrets James St

Peaks & Turrets, James Street

June 9, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It was a spectacular day today. Cold, but blue blue skies. And low sun. Forgot about that bit. Of course with the sun straight in your face, one has to find drawing subjects which are not too much in shadow, and that you can view from somewhere under a tree. This home on James Street is in the Federation style – just after turn of the century. This one is a particularly fine example,  using every kind of detail and […]

Pink House on George.

Pink House on George

June 8, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I have started the sketches for my ‘Homes & Gardens of Manly’ exhibition in September. The Manly Council have a 2 week Arts and Cultural Festival then which is very popular in the whole surrounding area. Mainly I’ll do sketches, some watercolours and hang them unframed. This has taken some thinking. I don’t actually sell my sketches as they are part of a record I keep of my travels. However, I have a special sketchbook just for this, and I’ll […]

Waves on Rocks 2

Waves on Rocks II

June 6, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Ok so it wasn’t finished. Today when I saw it again, I had my coffee and sat for a while observing. I usually know pretty quickly what to do, so spent a few more hours getting it right. A new point of interest is the black shag drying it’s wings. I hadn’t wanted anything fiddly in this painting as I wanted very soft edges and no sharp bits. But every sunny day the sea birds are there on the edge […]
