Blue Vase

Blue Vase

July 30, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I’ve always loved the use of French windows and doorways to look beyond, and into a painting. Been ages since I’ve done any but I seem to be headed that way now. This is another of my 12” square canvases which spoke to me. It said ‘Have a go at a familiar local scene, and wrap a French window round it.’ ‘Ok’  I said  ’Why not, I think it’s time to add to the decorative mood I seem to be […]

'Casa Mia' on the Harbour

A little bit Fauve

July 28, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I’m definitely heading into Fauvist- land. It was the 12 inch square canvas that made me do it, nothing to do with me. When you look at the canvas sizes you have purchased, you kinda decide from that what sort of work you’d like to do. The last 12 inch square, ‘Decorative Manly’ was a colourful little thing, but no linework added. This time I added outlines and sketchy details in whatever colours I liked.  Think I’ll do another to […]

Birkley Rd Hollywood Mission style

More Hollywood Spanish Mission

July 24, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Now that I’ve started drawing selected local homes, I’m seeing this style popping up quite a bit.  Should make it easier to draw those ‘twisted’ columns around doorways and arched balconies as I become familiar with it – you’d think. There is quite a charm to them among the Federation cottages, the San Francisco shingles, and the Terrace houses. I have to say I’m not sure what style some of the others are yet. But I’ll work it out as […]

Name in a Frame

Frame the Baby’s Name

July 20, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Isn’t this just the cutest! We have a new baby in our family. A dear little Rugby player. Or a poet. Or both. What gift could we give? More teddy bears (koalas,) more little fashion outfits, some classic beatrix Potter, some gold ingots?  Then I remembered these wonderful illustrations done by one of New Zealand’s best illustrators. Onto the website and flipped through the choices which all looked so good, and you get to see the name as a sample […]

Peepster Box - chocolat

Peepster Box Chocolat – but some missing

July 16, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

A parcel arrived. From Paris. Mmmmmm. What could it be. Inside was a wonderfully interesting box with 4 yummy coloured chocolate blocks peeping through the window.  Peepster Box Chocolat from London. Not your usual neat shapes and plain chocolatey brown. No no. These were freeform with colours pale and bright, and decorated with pieces of choc and nuts like 4 little abstract paintings. It was coming up to after dinner cafe time, and M was very keen to go in […]

Altered image - decorative Manly

A bit more Decorative Manly

July 15, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

One comment from someone who knows – and I act. Didn’t think I’d do more, but by adding 1 fishing boat, 2 seagulls, 2 yachts, 5 kayaks, and 7 moored yachts I think this little  12 inch square acrylic, is done and dusted. Thanks Jojo. ©ErinHill2011

Church on the Hill 2

Decorative Manly

July 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Got myself some 12inch square canvases. Really wanted to make a decorative style painting. Just adore this view so again the Church is on the hill, the ferry gliding past, and the square apartment blocks overlook the goings-on. Something very ‘story-like’ about this and a previous one (Happy Harbour). Maybe that’s what I like to do – tell a visual story with each painting. Something you can go back to time and again, and get something new each time. ©ErinHill2011 […]

Cat on the Wall, Steinton St

Cat on the Wall

July 6, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Another in my ‘Manly Homes and Gardens’ series.  I may decide to call the whole thing – ‘Streets of Manly’ cos I don’t know if I can stick to it. If I see something I like, then I draw it. Worry later if it fits the theme. Here there’s  a modern apartment complex in front, with bendy fence details, and a great group of ‘semi- detached’ houses – as we call them – along the street. Beyond that you have […]

Church on the Hill

Church on the Hill

July 4, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Another Winter painting. A 24 X 20 inch acrylic on canvas. But wait, you say, nobody swims and surfs in Winter! Well they do here. A most glorious afternoon. Winter can be like that. A perfect Summer day without the humidity. A few people wandering slowly along the sand. Seagulls wading in the stream trickling down to the sea. Some brave souls splashing about in the waves, and some on the beach – thinking about it. Anyway, from here you […]
