Inside - Still life for warm-up

The Art of Sketching – inside & out

October 31, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

On Thursday the warm-up sketch was a little more challenging. Handles, elipses, fruit, things sticking up and aaahhhhh……   But when one takes a breath, caaaalms – down and spend some time observing – it’s just shapes. Everything IS just shapes. Once your left brain is told to go and sit in the corner and keep quiet, it’s easy to see that. It takes practice but before long that’s how you see the subject. My mantra is…. how high, how […]

I Can’t Say ‘No’

October 28, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

OMG!  It’s happened again. Not my fault of course. No no it never is. It’s Friday and the Nice Man in the big truck is pulling up. The truck is so enormous it’s shading my artwork. Golly. I just know he’ll pop his head in and say ‘Hi’. But it’s what else he’s gonna say that’s my problem. I could hide under the desk, but he’s already seen me. ‘Hi Erin, I know you don’t want an ice cream, but […]

Tropical Manly 2

Tropical Manly 2

October 25, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I seem to be on a roll at the moment. Another acrylic painting has just been perked up. Perhaps I’m clearer now about how I want these decorative acrylics to look. I didn’t think the softer colours worked as well  on this one as the new added brights. I’ve kept the ‘lost edges’ though. Yes, it’s definitely stopping people while it’s in the window. The other paintings can stop quaking for the moment as I’m part way through a layered […]

Roof lines & Chimneys - 1st colours

Roof lines & Chimneys – Week 2 Subject

October 22, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Our class subject was roof lines & chimneys. After the initial still life setup, which everyone managed beautifully – I had some decorative metal keys and rings to sketch. Here we were looking at the twists and turns on quite small items. Good practice when observing iron gates & railings. Some sat on the edge of the warm pavement on the high side of a sloping street where the roof lines were very clear shapes. Someone else worked from a […]

Green Shutters & Still Life

Green Shutters with added Still Life

October 19, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I knew there was something not quite complete about ‘Green Shutters 1′. The thing I like about having work hanging in the Studio, is that sometimes you know something needs doing but don’t know what. Everything has been moved around now that the Exhibition is over and sold paintings gone. So it was a chance to see it in another position. I’m perfectly happy to hang paintings which may not be my favourite – at that stage and observe them. I’d […]

Whales in the Bay

Whales in the Bay

October 17, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Just the usual morning. Get the dogs ready to walk. Get me ready to walk. Off we go. What’s that black shape out in the bay? It’s not a boat, not a bird, not a dolphin. OMG it’s a whale – two actually.  Looks like a big one and baby. Awwwwwww. Cute. Suddenly people stop each other to point them out. Excitement, pointing, smiling. Conversations about which way they’re going, how graceful  they are, did you see them last week […]

French Village Garden

French Sketches – South of France

October 15, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

This is a collection of my sketches, done in the village of Trausse, South of France. It is here where we spend a week while on our Travel Sketch Tours. Selected sketches are available to order as prints in My Shop. These are sketches done as I observed & enjoyed special moments around the village. The above 2 sketches were done as I stood in the doorway of the Summer Kitchen, looking out to the little garden. the old wisteria, […]

First Sketch of the Day

First Sketch for the Class

October 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Everyone seems to need to get the pen, paper and head working to start a session. Like any class, it takes a moment to leave all the hurley-burley of the morning behind and settle into that first sketch – and relax. We started with a bit of discussion about observing the subject, breaking it down into shapes, and visually measuring height, width etc. So while the others sketch I like to do a very fast one of the setup. I […]

Waiting for the Ferry

Sketching Australian Botanicals

October 9, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It was a Sketchclub Meetup at The Botanical Gardens. Off I went quite early to grab a coffee and catch the ferry. As it turns out I had a few spare minutes to do a quick sketch of the view from the wharf. Might as well get the eye/hand coordination going before meeting the others. It was nice really. The Ferry men just waiting around to tie up the next ferry – my ferry. Quiet and peaceful on this early Saturday. […]
