Waiting Outside the Art Gallery

Rain. It must be Thursday.

November 30, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

We are getting very good at smiling through the rain. I like everyone to be able to sketch anywhere, anytime but….. some old fashioned sunshine would be nice. Is anyone listening up there? So it was that we headed for the Manly Art Gallery to sketch any exhibits which caught our eye, but especially the Bathing Exhibition, which feature all the items we used to wear in earlier times, plus the picnic, surfing and play gear. Most interesting. Trouble is […]

The Wedding

The Wedding

November 25, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

For me this is a larger work. 16 X 18 inches or thereabouts. Now doing some bigger watercolours in this sketch style. Weddings are very much part of the scene at Balmoral Beach, particularly on weekends. There were 7 groups having photos taken in the rotunda, and on the bridge to the Island when I was sketching there. The background is perfect for Wedding pics like this and the lighting is gorgeous anytime.. I’m amazed how each group can sweep […]

Elephants, Mothers & Babies

Elafmephants & other Jungle Animals

November 22, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

That’s what I called elephants when I was six. I still like that word. This was our Sketch Club outing at the Zoo. We rode all the way up to the top in the skypod thing, because it’s easier to slowly walk and sketch all the way down to the bottom, and catch the ferry home. Unless you are not going to the bottom, and then you have to walk up again!  You can’t win really, can you. Sunday is […]

Pouring Rain on Sketch Day

November 18, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

The forecast was for rain, but we still went ahead with our planned class visit to Cockatoo Island. My first sketch was waiting at a cafe for the others to arrive, and the black sky and reflections show what the day was like. The 2nd sketch is while seated on the ferry, looking out the window as we pulled away towards the harbour bridge – which was barely visible. The 3rd sketch was one to show the scale of the […]

Pale Moon

Pale Moon

November 17, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I intended to show some sketches from our class visit to a very wet Cockatoo Island, but haven’t had a chance to tidy up the work for you. Luckily my good friend Liz joined us today, and has done a gorgeous posting of this extraordinary location, adding her thoughts as she went.  For your interest here’s the link. http://www.lizsteel.com However for something that’s nothing to do with the above – I did a little lightening up of this little square acrylic […]

Jacaranda Time

Jacaranda Time

November 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I did this 16 X 12inch painting yesterday. I’m still seeing Jacarandas in bloom and wanted to do a larger work. I used watered down dark watercolour – brown & dark blue mixed around, then used a pointy brush to sketch in the main shapes. Then heaps of watery colour splashed around. I’m doing a few bigger ones like this at the moment. I checked with Raoul Dufy. Yes I think he’s pleased with me. ©ErinHill2011

Avenue of Jacarandas

Avenue of Jacarandas

November 10, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

We were lucky to get a Sketch day here in Kirribilli, which is known as one of the most amazing spots to see this street lined on both sides with beautiful jacarandas. A couple of weeks back they would have been even more magnificent, but this was our only chance and despite a little early rain, we did some lovely sketches. We artists are a hardy lot and weather is no deterrent. With the reward of a yummy lunch round […]

Coloured Pen Sketch

November 9, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

It rained on our last Sketch day class. Not so much on us, but on everyone. As it turned out we were planning to meet at an indoor/ outdoor cafe and work from there. Perfect. Rain was not a problem. People always want to eat and drink regardless so there were plenty of subjects to sketch. I was trying out my new Stabilo Coloured Pens. Thought I’d take away the safety net – the black pen – and try bright […]

French Sketches from 2008

November 7, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I found this sketchbook tucked away, in which I’d done a few sketches while spending some time in Paris in 2008. At the time I was concentrating a lot on watercolour painting, and not much on sketching. It’s only in the last year or so I’ve turned towards sketching in such a big way. So when I saw these again, they brought back so many memories of the chilly April days I was exploring and looking for painting locations. I’m […]
