We start in the Studio with a quick still life set-up, just to get ourselves in the mood. I help you to observe the subject and begin your first lines. If you are experienced I’ll critique when you need.
We take a wander along nearby streets, sketching as we go, exploring the theme of the week. I guide you with how to start the sketch.
We finish in a cafe where we take a table, order a delicious lunch (and a great coffee of course) and spread out our sketches and add the colour. I’ll be showing you how, using my own sketches as a demo. This is where we can see how each person works and learn from each other. I love this part.
Classes are based on sketching and learning to see. You won’t need a pencil, ruler or eraser. We start with a black waterproof pen only. Later we try differing mediums. You will learn to express yourself in your own style. You’ll gain confidence at sketching anywhere. The observations you’re making become your sketches. I like you to sign and date every sketch and note where you were. We keep every sketch to refer back to, because you’ll see what works and doesn’t.
As the term progresses and people are more confident, we may sketch in other locations around Sydney. We often have a particular subject to work on. In dubious weather, we might stay in for a still life set-up, go sketching at an Art Gallery or an interesting cafe where there is plenty to sketch.
Be sure to wear good walking shoes as we do a lot of exploring on foot.
Sketching is an art form in it’s own right. The people I’ve met and learned from are dedicated to their art.
This is more than just a few lines with an idea of doing a ‘real’ drawing later. It’s a way of expressing how you see the world through sketching.
Some create journals of family history, with photos and memorabilia, with notes and comments.
Others record their travel on buses, trains or ferries, their lunch, architecture, their favourite tea or coffee house. They create a record of their daily lives.
Some record their overseas travel.
They attend international conferences on sketching.
Our enjoyable classes will allow you to express in sketches whatever subjects appeal to you.
We will cover all the subjects you’d like including ‘people’.
You will find your own journey.
It will open your eyes to a world you’ve never quite seen before.
