It’s Up and Hanging

March 2, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Well it’s done. The paintings are hung. The exhibition is ready. At The Bather’s Pavilion Balmoral Beach. So glad the Opening isn’t till Tuesday night. Time to tweek anything that needs it. I will even arrive refreshed and ready to rock n roll. It rained all day but the paintings were already in the storeroom. Somehow having the best coffee available downstairs means I’m very happy. I admit I had a moment as I carried the last of the paintings […]

Ferries Passing, Balmoral

Ferries Passing, Balmoral

January 11, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Well this is different. For me anyway. By using a sketch as the reference, which I’d done on location at Balmoral Beach, I decided to block it in using my acrylics straight onto 300gsm Arches Aquarelle. Interesting how you get a slightly illustrative look, because it’s already that way in the sketch. Also has a pastel look, with the soft edges. I’m thinking of doing another in this technique to see if I like it, and if I can do […]

'Waiting for Shakespeare'

Mixed Media Acrylic – Balmoral & French Window

January 7, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

An entirely different work from the previous ‘Intense Colour Sketch’. Again based on a sketch done at Balmoral Beach when sketching one day, this was about 5pm in the afternoon. People were beginning to spread out their picnics and rugs and get out the crisp white wine. Tonight at 8pm sharp would be a performance of a Shakespeare play in the rotunda. This time I prepare an 18 X 24 inch canvas with scrunched paper towels which are then gessoed […]

From the Island, Balmoral

Colour Intense Sketch

January 5, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

I’m trying some serious colour for a new series of sketches. Done on 300gsm Aquarelle Arches. Good solid strong colour. Mask off the area and get the acrylic paint ready. Because I’m looking through my sketches for good compositions I don’t need to do any drawing or indications on the paper at all. I like to keep a real spontaneity about my work especially if it’s not the first time I’ve done a subject. Then it’s a matter of blocking […]

Pale Moon

Pale Moon

November 17, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I intended to show some sketches from our class visit to a very wet Cockatoo Island, but haven’t had a chance to tidy up the work for you. Luckily my good friend Liz joined us today, and has done a gorgeous posting of this extraordinary location, adding her thoughts as she went.  For your interest here’s the link. http://www.lizsteel.com However for something that’s nothing to do with the above – I did a little lightening up of this little square acrylic […]

Tropical Manly 2

Tropical Manly 2

October 25, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I seem to be on a roll at the moment. Another acrylic painting has just been perked up. Perhaps I’m clearer now about how I want these decorative acrylics to look. I didn’t think the softer colours worked as well  on this one as the new added brights. I’ve kept the ‘lost edges’ though. Yes, it’s definitely stopping people while it’s in the window. The other paintings can stop quaking for the moment as I’m part way through a layered […]

Green Shutters & Still Life

Green Shutters with added Still Life

October 19, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

I knew there was something not quite complete about ‘Green Shutters 1′. The thing I like about having work hanging in the Studio, is that sometimes you know something needs doing but don’t know what. Everything has been moved around now that the Exhibition is over and sold paintings gone. So it was a chance to see it in another position. I’m perfectly happy to hang paintings which may not be my favourite – at that stage and observe them. I’d […]

Whales in the Bay

Whales in the Bay

October 17, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

Just the usual morning. Get the dogs ready to walk. Get me ready to walk. Off we go. What’s that black shape out in the bay? It’s not a boat, not a bird, not a dolphin. OMG it’s a whale – two actually.  Looks like a big one and baby. Awwwwwww. Cute. Suddenly people stop each other to point them out. Excitement, pointing, smiling. Conversations about which way they’re going, how graceful  they are, did you see them last week […]
