Citrons & gaufres

Citrons, Gaufres et Français

May 6, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Today our sketch was the gorgeous bowl of fresh lemons. Lemon or citron seems very much a part of French cuisine. Give me a slice of Tarte Citron and I’m in heaven. Adeline says most of the lemons come from Menton on the Cote d’Azur. Menton – really – and so is Katherine Mansfield’s house ( famous NZ writer) where she spent time writing her wonderful short stories. Who’d have thought! Meantime the sketches were happening and Adeline was whipping up […]

Heaven, Easter Saturday

An Everlasting Weekend

March 31, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

It’s all a bit confusing having Easter in late March. Usually I know exactly what day it is when I wake. Now each of the 4 days feels like Saturday, or is it Sunday? Not that I don’t enjoy having some spare days to think about the world a little. Cos I do. No clock watching. Just do as you wish and if it’s not finished there’s still tomorrow. Easter is a religious celebration, and that for many is a […]

The Book that Started it all

March 30, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

My Mother was a great reader. In fact both my parents were. Every Saturday morning we’d get into the Austin and be driven to the local library. All of us would come home with a pile of books, plus Mum would get the latest magazines such as Home & Garden, Vogue and Dad would have Saturday Evening Post with Norman Rockwell on every cover and my brother would get Popular Mechanics. We loved it. Apart from alI the Enid Blyton […]

New Sketch&French Starts Soon

March 28, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

We have just completed our Term 1 Five week course, and our next one starts on Monday April 29. One of the class members said she loved coming and it was so nice doing something for herself, not the business. Come join the fun. Our class on March19, was essentially on shopping in Paris. We always start with a freshly made tea or coffee just to get in the mood, as we begin our sketches. We had a fabulous silver, […]

Sketch your Cake- and eat it too

February 27, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

This was our first 2013 Sketch your Cake High Tea. When someone says ‘I think I’ve died and gone to heaven’, you know everything is close to perfect. This is Gunner’s Barracks’ an old stone building, once the Officer’s Mess, and now so elegantly set up for dining. With views to Sydney harbour you can’t keep your eyes off, until your High Tea is served. For us it’s much more about the ‘look’ to begin with as all this needs to […]

Mardi 19 Février: Classe de Français

February 19, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

It was a busy morning but Adeline had made a very special gluten-free cake for class. We started with a cute bowl and spoon, a milk pot and some apples. (Un bol et cuillère avec des pommes) We do like to start with a tea or coffee, and today with a tasty French cake served with an apple puree. Mmmmm. Now to sketching. A little trickier than last week as we are now introducing elipses and perspective. However I just […]

The Door Bell chimes. Who could it be?

February 5, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Is it a lost stranger? Is it a Jehovah’s Witness? An axe murderer? No no, it’s Adeline. There she stands smiling, with 3 slices of Tarte au Chocolat on a plate and they are for me! This is made by an expert French cook called Marie. Her Chocolate Tart is to die for, and here we are being lucky enough to try it. There looks to be a layer of sour cherry with rich dark chocolate, in a pastry […]

Growing our own Salads

December 30, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

We’ve been feeling so proud of our mini market garden lately. This is a lovely vision to greet one on our balcony. It was all a bit of a try out really. There’s a small garden areas and a balcony around the townhouse which face the sun. Could we grow some veggies there instead of dried grass? We cleared the overgrown grasses and dug the soil. We stuck in some tomatoes to start and gave them a pyramid stand to […]
