Baskets, Manly Ferry & the Cove

May 11, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 9 ’13 I know I keep talking about the weather but it’s just too beautiful. Downunder we should be headed for cold. That’s usually june. MMmmm. In the Studio where all the action was, we were doing baskets. Round ones, long ones, lidded ones and 2 little old dolls from Peru. A nice touch. Yes there are some challenges. Getting each shape right, getting the inside shadows to show corners turning, the light on top, the darker sides […]

Pumpkins, Capsicums and Soldiers

February 23, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Our still life for this week were tiny mottled pumpkins in colours of marigold and forest green. On our other table, red green and yellow capsicums (bell peppers to some of you) with asparagus and brown mushrooms. THURSDAY FEB 21 ’13 So attractive to view and such rich colour to capture. All versions you see above tell the story so well. Each one a personal sketch of how it looked to to them. When we hold sketches up as progress […]

Cafe/Sketchup at Belgrave Cartel

January 11, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Still holidays but Monica was back in town, so couldn’t wait to organise a sketch and catchup. When I arrived at 10ish or so, I wandered out to the spacious back room, off the sun lit side passage, to see at least 3 of the girls totally absorbed in their sketching already. Belgrave Cartel is once again one of our fave meetup places to sketch. Since the renovations they’ve opened up a back room now connected by a sunny […]

Sketching demos – watercolour & white space

January 8, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Usually the demo sketches stay in my sketchbook. These are 2 from a recent lesson which I thought showed my use of layers of watercolour. In other words not pre-mixed in the lid of the paint box. These two were done as the client was sketching the same views/setups. They are done incredibly fast as I’m explaining what I’m doing as I go. Hence the loose look. Just what I want. Less is more as they say. I love to […]

Midnight. NYE Sydney 2012

New Year’s Eve Sydney

January 2, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Not a black line in sight. Pure watercolour sketch. It’s too impossible for me to watch fireworks and sketch. I’m sure there’s a way, and if there is I’ll try to find it. So from my photo reference I present Sydney exploding at Midnight Dec 31 2012. It was a fantastic display – as it always is – and I hope I’ve captured here something of the essence of the night. ©ErinHill2013

Small Canvas Acrylic & Line Paintings

September 25, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

New work. Small square canvases. Simple compositions. Clear colour. Must be Spring! These first 3 are all based on location sketches which I felt would work as fresh colour with line sketch detail paintings. Getting a good response from those who’ve seen them. The Studio is looking very cheerful. Available in SHOP. ©ErinHill2012

Thursday Sept 20. Sketch your own Art Materials

Art Materials, & Mexican

September 21, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Thursday September 20 ’12 This is our last Thursday for the term, and we finished with a bang. Decided to have everyone sketch their own art kit, just for something a bit personal. All a lot of fun. So beautiful and hot, and first detour – no not coffee – was a Speakeasy called Harlem. One of the girls had mentioned this idea, but didn’t realise there was one right here on the Corso. Not many had heard of it, and […]

Water soluble Wax Crayons

June 22, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

What fun these are. I like trying different mediums to see what happens. Did a quick sketch while at Interpolitan in line then applied a few crayons using layers to build intensity where it’s needed, and softly for other places. Next the waterbrush is used – sparingly people. Hold back or you get blaaah. it was warm enough the other day to sit outside and sketch the coffee ordering window. Not today with class though. Nice and warm inside. See […]

Line sketches with Inktense pencils & water

Trying Inktense Pencils on Sketches

June 7, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

This was an experiment. So that we can try different mediums with colour on our sketches, we tried out Elaine’s Inktense pencils. Two arrangements of hibiscus. Luscious blooms. At first we thought they may be similar to the regular watercolour pencils we use. We still use layering. Just 4 colours you’ll get every colour you want. No colour is used as is. All the colours benefit form a light layer of the others. You learn to press lighter or darker […]
