Building Blocks, French Boxes & Bell Towers

March 17, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MARCH 14 2013 I knew people would groan when they arrived. Nothing forgiving about perspective. Just so happens if you don’t have some idea about how it goes you’ll forever wonder why your buildings don’t look quite right. With different sized boxes on one table, we had the kids building blocks made into a sort of church on the other. I had a demo sketch on the whiteboard,  which helps see the direction the lines go. Most people had […]

Lunch & Sketch. Cafe la Bas

Cafes we Love for Sketching

September 17, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

We know many of the good cafes in Manly these days. It’s part of the pleasure we take for the last part of out weekly Sketch Classes. Cafe La Bas is a favourite. It has a small European Cafe feel. The coffee is some of the best. Lecio roasts his own beans every week and has special ones featured for you to try. We like the food choices and always find just what we feel like. And we often score […]

Man on the Tyres resting

Face to Face with ‘Man on the Tyres’

September 11, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

At last I was able to personally visit ‘The Man on the Tyres’ since he’d been removed from his Sydney Rd site of over 80 years, and introduce myself. Thanks to our Mayor, Jean Hay, I could find out where he was and get to sketch him. My attachment to this loved local character, atop 80 or so tyres at Sinden’s Tyre & Rubber Company, started when we would drive down the hill to Manly years ago, and there he […]

Sketching with a Friend

September 3, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

We had such a lovely catchup day. This is a long term painting friend who I’ve painted with since we reconnected many a year back. We would plan a day to go on location, take our dogs and our picnic lunch and off we’d go. Both of us were working in oils then, though I went seriously into watercolour after that, and more recently to acrylic and line. At her studio I was thrilled to see Glenys trying new mediums […]

Wood in Architecture, Coffee & Yummy things

August 31, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Now it’s coming back to me. The most used building material here is wood. Beautiful homes and elegant buildings. All of wood. No termites to munch them up. Milton and I had coffee further along the main road at Dizzengoff Cafe. Right behind Milton’s head was the Polynesian Methodist Church, a lovely old building in wood. It ended up as a sketch amongst the other bits and pieces on the page. Also passed by bright green lawns with little white […]

Coffee and cruising

August 30, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Being somewhere else means you are out of your usual routine but having your first coffee of the day helps to settle you in. It was gorgeous to catch up with old friends again and there’ll be more of this during the week. Later back at the house I was so taken with this spectacular view of Skytower in the main part of Auckland city. It’s even more so at night when all the lights are glittering. I’m enjoying sketching […]

On the way

August 29, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Ben very kindly transported us to the airport. It was kinda interesting to sketch in the car. You end up with a few lines in funny places as you bump or go round corners, even through tunnels. It all just adds to the personality of the sketch. Then there are a couple of sketches done while Milton checked out the Duty Free. If you sit there long enough you start to think you need to buy something.

Thursday Class July 19. Still Life & Cakes

July 20, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Flower & Fruit still life Eyeing the Adriano Zumbo cake display Just a few offerings for you Thursday July 19 ’12 First day of term and everyone was happy to be back for some sketching together again. A rather chilly day though. Decided to do a bright flower setup with some fruit as we were welcoming Penny today, and that’s a bit of fun to get started on. In fact her sketch was lovely. I think she was a little […]
