Baskets, Manly Ferry & the Cove

May 11, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 9 ’13 I know I keep talking about the weather but it’s just too beautiful. Downunder we should be headed for cold. That’s usually june. MMmmm. In the Studio where all the action was, we were doing baskets. Round ones, long ones, lidded ones and 2 little old dolls from Peru. A nice touch. Yes there are some challenges. Getting each shape right, getting the inside shadows to show corners turning, the light on top, the darker sides […]

Lunch at Ciao Belli Cafe

The Seagull and Me

May 7, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

A very nice day again. Decided to pop in to Ciao Belli Cafe, sit quietly in the sun, and sketch. Flavia brought me a delicious Greek Salad and I settled into the seat with a seaside view. St Patrick’s sits high on the hill above the wharf. The Norfolk pines framed the setting. Looked like a sketch to me. Not a soul around so it seemed more like my own place, unlike weekends when we share Manly with all the […]

Champagne, Shiraz & Seaside Shelters

April 6, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Wow did it rain yesterday morning. I normally don’t worry at all about rain as there’s always somewhere to shelter and sketch. We would’ve been a long time in the Studio if that cloudburst had come down today. However all was well. Everyone arrived dry and we hardly had a drop till almost time to head into the Greek Cafe at lunch. I’d found 2 hand painted champagne flutes in a household cleanup recently. It’s amazing what people throw out, […]

Heaven, Easter Saturday

An Everlasting Weekend

March 31, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

It’s all a bit confusing having Easter in late March. Usually I know exactly what day it is when I wake. Now each of the 4 days feels like Saturday, or is it Sunday? Not that I don’t enjoy having some spare days to think about the world a little. Cos I do. No clock watching. Just do as you wish and if it’s not finished there’s still tomorrow. Easter is a religious celebration, and that for many is a […]

Seashells, Waves & Surfers

March 2, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

It was all about the sea this week. We live next to it so we chose to sketch sea shells, surfers, beaches and boats. THURSDAY FEB 28 ’13 Sea shells are such glorious creations. When you study the fine details you can’t help but be amazed at their designs and shapes. We tried one sketch using just watercolour pencils, and a touch of waterbrush. Then for a second one, line and water-colour with a  bit of white chinagraph pencil scribbled […]

Erin - Sketch demo Federation Pt

Sketching demos – watercolour & white space

January 8, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Usually the demo sketches stay in my sketchbook. These are 2 from a recent lesson which I thought showed my use of layers of watercolour. In other words not pre-mixed in the lid of the paint box. These two were done as the client was sketching the same views/setups. They are done incredibly fast as I’m explaining what I’m doing as I go. Hence the loose look. Just what I want. Less is more as they say. I love to […]

Early Morning on the Cove

It Must be Christmas…..

December 24, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

It must be Christmas when….. the yachts and launches moor overnight in the Cove….This is the glorious sight I beheld this morning as I sat out to sketch the soft colour with everything almost in silhouette. Earlier in December a few begin to stay over on weekends. On boxing day there will be dozens and for NY eve you could walk across the bay over them and not touch the sea. It must be Christmas when…. we have the biggest […]

Thurs Nov 22. Perfume & Wooden hands

Perfume,Hands,Streets & Boats

November 24, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Our Sketching Week. Nov 22,23,24.  An excellent week for our sketchers. Take a look. THURSDAY NOV 22 ’12 I love the new wooden hands they had in my Art store. One is slightly larger than the other so having two together is a great sketch for people. The two hands are not forgiving if you don’t observe well before starting your sketch. And seeing I sketched my new perfume yesterday, that was the inspiration for the other choice today. Both […]

Sunday Sept 16. Mixed Flower set up

Sunday Sketching. Manly Arts Festival. Sep 16.

September 16, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

What a fabulous day it was for Manly Arts Festival’s first Sunday of sketching.  Perfect blue and no wind. Well that came later in the day. We had 2 flower settings, both different in colour and the style. Everyone took a moment to take a good hard look at the thing as a whole, then decided where the centre was, to get that in the centre of your page – if possible. That’s not easy when you haven’t sketched before, […]
