Eiffel Tower & Notre Dame on The Seine

Paris Sketches

September 7, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

This a small collection of some of my Paris sketches. All were done as I spent time wandering and observing the delights of life in Paris in 2010. I hope you enjoy the journey with me. Wander and enjoy the lovely moments sketching allows you to have. We will be back in Paris in May 2013 and you may even like to join us there as we add new work to our Sketch books. We stood on the bridge and […]

My Classic Balmoral Beach

August 6, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I am really love having my Studio. Oops, will try that again. I love having my Studio. Just shows where my head is right now!!! This Balmoral Beach painting was wanted by late August, and it’s now done. The colours appear a bit sharper here than they really are.  It’s based on a larger one and when looking at a copy of the other, this one definitely has it’s own personality.  It doesn’t have it’s title yet – I’m letting […]

Watercolour/Acrylic Experiment

July 25, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I wanted to get painting as soon as I returned from the last overseas trips to France and Italy. It’s great to get home but one worries that everything you’ve learned might somehow be forgotten now that you are back in familiar territory. I grabbed the watercolour 300gsm block, which is what I paint on mostly, and decided to paint the view from our windows. The sun was getting low so this would be perfect for putting on some soft […]

My Old Paint Palette

Faithful Paint Palette

July 23, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I was using this palette today on a watercolour commission. I have to see if they still make them like this. Glenys gave it to me in 1990. I loved it then and still do. But before It travelled with me recently, I had to tape all round the outside edges, to stop it leaking when I have washes in the lid. Seems to be working so far. You can see the cracks in the pic. I rarely clean the […]

Studio Takes Shape

July 16, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I just love it already. No running water yet. No shelving or storage yet. No work tables yet.  Nothing on the walls yet. All coming soon. However the important thing was to establish that this studio is taking shape. There are paintings on easels in the window and a box of  greeting cards. This establishes what I do. The windows have been cleaned and I’ve polished up the dull old brass door handle and street numbers. But the coffee is […]

My New Studio

July 11, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Things have been happening. Since returning from France and Italy I have realised that I want a place to paint in, spread out, walk away. leave paints where they are, paint early, paint late…… etc. I’ve always had space for all this in the houses we’ve lived in. But then we downsized to our gorgeous townhouse by the harbour. That has been fine for smaller works but now I want to go bigger and messier and explore other mediums and […]

The old Iron bed, Trausse

Painted in Southern France

June 18, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

Painted on location in Southern France. 300gsm A3 size. The 2 line drawings I showed the other day were the working drawings I did from the doorway of the Summer Kitchen. In the end I decided on the old iron bed with the 2 periwinkle blue doors behind. My heart just soars when I see this perfect little French setting, the sun high and hot in a clear blue sky and happy chirps breaking the silence. So i have finally […]

Tour Eiffel

Tour Eiffel

May 10, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

What a fabulous structure this is. It looks like lace but is a solid grey enormous metal construction. We like this end of the park because it is only locals who are there. People with dogs, business people taking a shortcut, and little ol’ ladies with their shopping caddies, and lots of trees. Decided to whizz the 2 outside lines down, then take it from there. Actually I have unwittingly condensed the lower part to fit the page, – as […]

Setting Sun

Setting Sun

April 6, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I had to go fast to catch this at all. I happened to look up as the sun was casting a warm light on the buildings opposite, before it ducked down below the hill. I have a few bits and pieces set up on a small table which I leave there in case inspiration hits! So without any drawing I went for the water and sloshed it into the warm colours to begin the buildings, sky and then sea. It […]
