Apples Leaves & Trees

March 9, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

I’ve done some demo sketch treatments of leaves and trees on the whiteboard, so you’ll see that way below, for your interest. THURSDAY MARCH 7 ’13 A bright sunny day this Thursday. Already our 6th week of this term. We simply had to have apples as a sketch still life today – all the way from the Blue Mts, and the same apples sketched over 3 days. We’re doing trees in the park, so it seems a good idea to […]

Pumpkins, Capsicums and Soldiers

February 23, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Our still life for this week were tiny mottled pumpkins in colours of marigold and forest green. On our other table, red green and yellow capsicums (bell peppers to some of you) with asparagus and brown mushrooms. THURSDAY FEB 21 ’13 So attractive to view and such rich colour to capture. All versions you see above tell the story so well. Each one a personal sketch of how it looked to to them. When we hold sketches up as progress […]

Sketching demos – watercolour & white space

January 8, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Usually the demo sketches stay in my sketchbook. These are 2 from a recent lesson which I thought showed my use of layers of watercolour. In other words not pre-mixed in the lid of the paint box. These two were done as the client was sketching the same views/setups. They are done incredibly fast as I’m explaining what I’m doing as I go. Hence the loose look. Just what I want. Less is more as they say. I love to […]

Thurs Nov 15. Croissants, baguettes and coffee

Croissants & Jacarandas

November 17, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Sketching this week. Nov 15,16,17. This week seems to have a French flavour to it.   Having had our very successful Sketch&French class on Tuesday somehow a little of that has carried on through the week…………… We had the white setting with croissant and gardenia on one table and the more contemporary blue setting with baguette on the other.  Our sketches of the 2 settings look very edible, and definitely catch the mood of the moment. While the Jacarandas are […]

Thurs. Oct 25. Sketching ourselves

Portraits & Streetscapes

October 27, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Oct 25,26,27th ’12 Another week with some fun and challenging subjects……. THURSDAY OCT 25 ’12 Not a still life in sight. Whatever will we sketch then! The answer – each other. The idea is to sketch whoever is nearby, so you are not staring at each other. This also means people will hold that position till their own sketch is done.  One cannot take this personally as you’ll discover. We just want the shape and character of whoever we are sketching. Some […]

Thursday Oct 11. Red Bottlebrush and gold Grevillea

Grevillea & Belgian Waffles

October 12, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Back to Sketch Classes again for Term 4. Oct 11 & 12 ’12 Thursday October 11.  Bit of a grey ol’ day, after the hot hot ones we’ve had it was a bit tough. But let’s see what we got up to this week. The native Spring flowers are just glorious at the moment. Streets and gardens are lined with red bottlebrush and various warm shades of grevillea. On my way to the Studio I picked 2 nice bunches as our still […]

First Still Life Sketch

Sunday Sept 30 Sketching. Manly Arts Festival

September 30, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Another amazing day. Blue skies and the feel of a hot summer to come. A lovely keen group for the final of our 3 Manly Arts Festival Sunday Sketches. People with a little experience had three mannequins in different poses to work on.  Those who had no previous sketching that they could recall, had the daises and lavender or the Endeavour. Once everyone was settled and observing their still life setup, came instructions on how to visually measure the height […]

Lunch & Sketch. Cafe la Bas

Cafes we Love for Sketching

September 17, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

We know many of the good cafes in Manly these days. It’s part of the pleasure we take for the last part of out weekly Sketch Classes. Cafe La Bas is a favourite. It has a small European Cafe feel. The coffee is some of the best. Lecio roasts his own beans every week and has special ones featured for you to try. We like the food choices and always find just what we feel like. And we often score […]

Tuesday Sept 11. Cups & Jug still life.

Tea Cups & Manly Cove

September 14, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Let’s see what we achieved this week. Tues Sept11, Thurs Sept13, Fri Sept14 ’12 Tuesday Sept 11 ’12 A bright and sunny day after all. This week we’re doing some cup/jug still life settings. This is something one comes across any time you are sketching food. There will always be elipses.  Be it plates, cups or bowls. You also have to get them looking like they are on the same level. Our sketchers certainly were up for the challenge and noted […]
