Squirrel in the Snow

Snow Sketches from Downunder

December 13, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I have decided to do my ‘Snow’ series of sketches, because I’m constantly amazed how many searches there are on my site for this subject. And – because the snow on my posts looks great on these! For me of course, this is the summer. Hot days, sunburn, balmy evenings, far too many parties. And we have Oprah! How’bout that. What more could you ask for! We were in Tahoe this time last year, and I began a few drawings to […]

Snow Sketches with Watercolour

January 4, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

For the time we have been in this snow setting, my eye has been taking in all it can to do with contrast. That’s one of the biggest most obvious things with snow. But the objects which seem dark in contrast are much less so than one thinks. I have 2 sketches done so far and now I’m getting some colour washed into them to see how they work. I felt reasonably happy with my first efforts. There were squirrels […]

Pathway in snow

Snow Compositions

January 1, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I am so excited by the prospect of taking home my sketches and pics, and beginning the paintings that will follow this adventure. There is a lightness to the whole scene which I hadn’t expected. Unlike a rainy day, the snow flakes I’ve met just touch your face and melt. Different of course when you take the shovel and try to clear the driveway. Then it is solid and hard to move. For my paintings, I will show the lightness […]

Snow is Art

December 29, 2009 by ErinHill Sketching

I have been warming up to painting snow scenes. It’s not something I have done very much of – apart from snow capped distant mountains. This is a new challenge to be sure and I’m doing as many reference shots of different snow compositions as I can. I am getting used to having to overdress against the cold before venturing out. Means it takes ages to get pens, pads and camera etc out of 100 pockets. But we get there. […]

Art of Wyoming

December 21, 2009 by ErinHill Sketching

Yankee Boots Being in Wyoming has been a wonderful occasion to observe the ancient and local art. In The Plains Hotel, which is in the old part near the station, the buffalo had been used as quite a theme. Leadlights are very much part of  local interior design, so I took a pic of the ones in the foyer. The fabric on the chairs in the rooms again reflected this theme. The buffalo appeared in many ways. Statues outside public […]

Autumn trees Berkeley

Baby it’s Cold Outside

December 12, 2009 by ErinHill Sketching

The colours are still lovely in Berkeley, even though it is cold as heck, and raining. I went to the Blue Guerilla cafe and did some drawing (with a normal sized cup of coffee – I have trained them) It was nice listening to the chatter as I sketched the Still Life on the table. I have purchased a portable watercolour set, so I will add some paint when the light is better. I saw a squirrel on Vine St […]

Colour on a Grey Day

Colour on a Grey Day

December 11, 2009 by ErinHill Sketching

Worth a visit. A lovely space but glad I always ask the best way to view several floors. This is the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It was definitely a grey day and the rain about to begin, and boy, it was cooold. So looking for colour was on my mind. And colour I found. I adore colour and find it hard to see how other painters go for more more neutral palettes. one painter had spent his whole […]

Autumn Leaf Colours

December 8, 2009 by ErinHill Sketching

Stepped off the plane and explored the intrigues of Berkeley. After coming from Australia, to see these yellow and red leaves was a showstopper. Well it is my first day so it doesn’t take much!! I love these colours anyway and somehow these leaves seem too perfect to be lying about on the ground. The trees are wonderful, as a painter I can see a composition on every corner. I have kept my word and sketched for a few minutes […]
