Baskets, Manly Ferry & the Cove

May 11, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 9 ’13 I know I keep talking about the weather but it’s just too beautiful. Downunder we should be headed for cold. That’s usually june. MMmmm. In the Studio where all the action was, we were doing baskets. Round ones, long ones, lidded ones and 2 little old dolls from Peru. A nice touch. Yes there are some challenges. Getting each shape right, getting the inside shadows to show corners turning, the light on top, the darker sides […]

Citrons & gaufres

Citrons, Gaufres et Français

May 6, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Today our sketch was the gorgeous bowl of fresh lemons. Lemon or citron seems very much a part of French cuisine. Give me a slice of Tarte Citron and I’m in heaven. Adeline says most of the lemons come from Menton on the Cote d’Azur. Menton – really – and so is Katherine Mansfield’s house ( famous NZ writer) where she spent time writing her wonderful short stories. Who’d have thought! Meantime the sketches were happening and Adeline was whipping up […]

Cheeky coffee at Boronia Tea Room

Cakes Glorious Cakes

May 1, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

What beautiful 3 tiered cake display stands arrived at our table for our Sketch your Cake High Tea. Here we are at Boronia House, gazing at the table which would be ours, and the colours of the old-fashioned style tea cups, each a different colour. Then the gerberas in small glass jars caught our eye. All side lit as the sun came in through the tall window with a perfect tree outside. Maybe it’s a painting we are about to […]

Gardénia blanc et Camelia rose avec du pain de banane

April 29, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

We had our first Sketch&French class for Term 2 today. What a glorious few weeks of perfect weather we are having. Perfect too for starting another S&F class with a few newcomers to welcome. To make it not too frightening for those who are new to sketching, I always find simple flowers are a lovely way to begin. Your lines will always look like the flower in front of you if you take a moment to really look at it’s shape. […]

Manly Village Cafe

A Quick Fix Sketch

April 26, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

There I was, sitting under the wooden portico in this cafe, checking out the ambiance, the coffee, the menu and so on. I had my sketching kit with me so decided to do a quick sketch. You’d think I’d be better at this, but I used a way too thin pen to start and wasn’t happy! For a moment I thought I heard myself say ‘ I think I’ll tear it out’ What was I thinking! I preach the mantra […]

Quarantine Station. Vistas & Vignettes

April 13, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY APRIL 11 What a stunning day. One out of the box. A perfect day for an adventure. At 10am everyone managed to be at the Info Centre ready for our trip down the bumpy ol’ road to the Quarantine Station on the foreshore of the harbour. For 140 years new arrivals were brought here if anyone on the ship was suspected of having a contagious disease. Smallpox in the 1800s, Bubonic plague in the 1900′s, Spanish influenza 1918 -19, […]

Sketching Towards Easter

March 23, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MARCH 21 ’13 Our still life setups were in place. A nice old ‘Ford’ car on one table and a small not very accurate model of the good ship Endeavour on the other. Tom arrived with a bag of fresh out of the oven pretzels! – as you do! ‘We’re having a musical soiree at home and these are a few spare pretzels to share’. Onto the plates, with some butter and a tasty addition to the transport setups […]

Apples Leaves & Trees

March 9, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

I’ve done some demo sketch treatments of leaves and trees on the whiteboard, so you’ll see that way below, for your interest. THURSDAY MARCH 7 ’13 A bright sunny day this Thursday. Already our 6th week of this term. We simply had to have apples as a sketch still life today – all the way from the Blue Mts, and the same apples sketched over 3 days. We’re doing trees in the park, so it seems a good idea to […]

Blue Mts Getaway – March 2013

March 7, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

A rainy ol’ Sunday. What better thing to do than tootle off to the Blue Mts for a Sketching Getaway. Everyone arrived at Kurrajong Village on the dot of 10, bright eyed and bushy tailed. Bluebox Cafe was very happy to give us a balcony table overlooking the blue and lavender misty Gross Valley. We ordered our essential first caffeine of the day, and a tasty something if we’d missed breakfast. Introductions took place for those who hadn’t met but […]
