Gâteau à goûter et géraniums à dessiner

May 13, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Things were going a bit pear-shaped today.  Some days are like that! I’d raced to the Studio to set up the tables with a gorgeous potted geranium and another long stemmed one in a glass. Then we started straight into sketching – how high, how wide – my mantra. But this time we’d be pushing things along and doing two sketches within the hour. Oops, realised I hadn’t made the Mariage tea we always start with! Anyway, […]

Baskets, Manly Ferry & the Cove

May 11, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

THURSDAY MAY 9 ’13 I know I keep talking about the weather but it’s just too beautiful. Downunder we should be headed for cold. That’s usually june. MMmmm. In the Studio where all the action was, we were doing baskets. Round ones, long ones, lidded ones and 2 little old dolls from Peru. A nice touch. Yes there are some challenges. Getting each shape right, getting the inside shadows to show corners turning, the light on top, the darker sides […]

Completing a sketch at Cafe La Bas

Urban Sketching Manly with Liz Steel

April 23, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Liz and I have cafe meetings. This suits us both. She has tea and I have my Flat White. Aaaah –  the satisfaction. We have much to talk about, often at the same time. We get so excited about everything to do with sketching. I’m probably not as addicted as she, I discover.  Who else do you know who texts to say ‘Slight traffic delay, ETA 9.15′. Then when she arrives at the Studio at 9.16,  has done 2 car […]

Champagne, Shiraz & Seaside Shelters

April 6, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Wow did it rain yesterday morning. I normally don’t worry at all about rain as there’s always somewhere to shelter and sketch. We would’ve been a long time in the Studio if that cloudburst had come down today. However all was well. Everyone arrived dry and we hardly had a drop till almost time to head into the Greek Cafe at lunch. I’d found 2 hand painted champagne flutes in a household cleanup recently. It’s amazing what people throw out, […]

Open Day in the Studio

January 18, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

It occurred to me that one of the nicest ways to let everyone know more about our Sketching Classes is to invite them in….. So we whizzed up a cute poster and have told as many news outlets we can, that the doors will be flung open. That’ll be Saturday Jan 26th 11am – 3pm at 97 Sydney Rd, Manly, Sydney. Parking available in side streets. We’ll have coffee brewing, muffins and other nibbles to try. I’ll be there, plus […]

Urban Sketching at Pyrmont

January 12, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

This is Liz and Alissa’s baby. A get together of passionate sketchers who would rather do this than anything else. With my brand new sample sketchbook from Stillman & Birn, I hit the streets. The word was it’d be 40+ degrees again, so from Liz was, only come if you are keen So that’s a definite. ‘Yes’ for me. I sketch in any weather as do most of the others. This is an early part of Sydney established for workers […]

Joanna from Glasgow working in 43 degrees in Sydney!

What to wear in 43 degree heat

January 8, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

This is probably one of NSW’s hottest ever days. We get days like this. This country is of contrasts. Can have floods (not at the moment) fire, yes houses and people being lost right now, heat, yes 43 degrees instead of a cool 33! Violent hot southerly buster late in the day – just blew the whiskey decanter over – hot whiskey anybody? That wind is a nightmare for the firefighters. The 2 dogs ( one being doggysat ) both […]

Midnight. NYE Sydney 2012

New Year’s Eve Sydney

January 2, 2013 by ErinHill Sketching

Not a black line in sight. Pure watercolour sketch. It’s too impossible for me to watch fireworks and sketch. I’m sure there’s a way, and if there is I’ll try to find it. So from my photo reference I present Sydney exploding at Midnight Dec 31 2012. It was a fantastic display – as it always is – and I hope I’ve captured here something of the essence of the night. ©ErinHill2013

Delwood Beach below us

Summer at the Beach. NYE.

December 31, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

The colours in the water at little Delwood beach are quite remarkable. This is summer at it’s best. Swimming is a must when you see these colours, and for me a sketch as well. I’m pleased for people who work hard all year and only have this time as their holiday. On a day like this you go for breakfast at a seaside cafe. You walk a little further at a leisurely pace. You wonder in amazement at ones rushing […]
