Sketching in the Arcade

Thursday July 26th. Arcade Sketching Fruit & Veggies

July 26, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Thursday’s Class was being challenged today. A fruit and veggie still life, both to be sketched and colour applied in one hour. If you are travelling, (and 2 of the girls are about to), you’d be lucky to even get that long. So this was us, imagining we were in Rome or Athens or Tibet, just sketching something quickly which sums up the feel of where we are. We are off to a local arcade, where we were planning a sketch of a […]

When Molly met Harry

When Molly met Harry

May 31, 2012 by ErinHill Sketching

Molly is two and a half.  Harry popped out on April 28th, about a month ago. This is their first meeting on that day. The photo came by iphone and we all melted. Then it seemed that possible a sketch could come of it. Not that it’s something I do. Sketch from photos. But the pic was so lovely I decided to have a go. Line sketch with watercolour. I think it worked. Molly was thrilled. Harry slept on. ©ErinHill2012

Art Deco – Kurrajong

February 13, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

They have it all in Kurrajong. Why go any further if you happen to be looking for a little something in the Art Deco period (1927 – 1935) Just take a stroll along the main road, past Sassafras Creek Cafe, but not as far on as Midsommer St Stephen’s, and you cannot miss it. Classic zig zag and straight lines. Decor in Shell Pink, with Olive Green. It looks great actually and is a perfect show place for […]

10pm Saturday 31º

Red Sky in the Morning…

February 6, 2011 by ErinHill Sketching

…shepherd’s warning. 10 p.m. Saturday night. I am outside on the balcony gazing to the view beyond, breathing in the cooler air.  31º but 10º lower than the day. A crazy moment comes when I decide to do a quick sketch. Low lighting from inside glows enough for me to see the sketch book page. It’s strange not seeing where the colours are in the tiny paint box, or where I’m putting them on the few lines drawn. I decide […]

Organising the Drawing Gear

April 18, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

It started because I always forget the way the portable easel fits together. It only comes out when I travel. If I made a drawing with instructions I thought I could refer to it if I need to. Having worked it out now I’m probably fine but once you arrive at a completely unknown location and looking madly for the right  subject to start on – I may suffer one of those moments and be flapping round like a dill. […]

Watercolour first

Oriental Lilies

March 27, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

One could get the idea that all my sketches recently are this bouquet of perfumed Oriental Lilies.  I promise this is the third and final one. The blooms are mostly out now and I’ve taken out any that are over, so it’s not exactly the same anymore, but then neither has my treatment of the medium. I decided to put the colour down first. This meant letting go a bit, as I didn’t even do a pencil composition. Just wet the […]

Sunrise-Watercolour with line

March 16, 2010 by ErinHill Sketching

I wasn’t expecting to paint early this morning. I mean, it’s midweek and I have things to do , places to be!! When I opened my eyes my first thought was to get the kettle on. But I could see the warm glow sneaking through the crack in the curtains – so mind being pin sharp – filled my water jar, and thought ” I’ll have a go at this.”  Opened the water colours, and began putting down washes. I […]
